Yaks live at extreme altitudes on the icy plateaus of Tibet. Only there do they develop their thick coat. The feather-light, particularly long-fibered undercoat is combed out by hand and spun into fine yarn. Despite its delicacy, yak wool is hard-wearing and resists abrasion and pilling.
